What does a Devon Commercial Photographer do During Lockdown?

Devon commercial photographer, Tony Cobley has been keeping busy during the Coronavirus lockdown. Between volunteering in his local community and the occasional safe home product photoshoot, Tony has also been providing virtual photography tuition for hobby snappers anywhere in the world via Zoom. He’s also giving free on line consultations with business owners and marketing professionals to discuss photography plans for the other side of lockdown. This week, Tony has done a product photo shoot for a new client in Devon. “Allies of Nature” are a start-up emotional wellbeing business making flower essences who have put lots of effort into their branding and design. They needed quality images to show off their brand across all marketing material and social media. Tony who is a location commercial photographer was able to build a studio at his home near Plymouth in South Devon to do the product shoot. This maintained maximum social distancing and he handled the products with gloves to be extra safe. Tony shot individual images of all 22 flower essence products and then made some creative group shots. Simon Blackler, owner of “Allies of Nature” was thrilled with the resulting images and said: “I have just downloaded all the pics, what an awesome photoshoot, looks like you had some fun!! Great group shots as well as the individual bottles. I couldn’t have asked for any more. I’m looking forward to showing off your fantastic work. Brilliant job, first class effort.” Tony is keen to talk to anyone involved in marketing about future plans for the other side of the current lockdown and offers free photography consultations via Zoom for business owners and marketing / comm's professionals. Royal Photography in the SW

I little while ago I had the pleasure of photographing HRH The Princess Royal in North Somerset. This was the second time I've photographed Princess Anne this year, documenting a royal visit to a local South West organisation. The visit was to the Butler Trust and the Bristol, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire Community Rehabilitation Company where the princess met award winners and members of both organisations. Working to strict security, logistical and briefing guidelines, I managed to get some nice natural reportage images of the event which will be used by both organisations for public relations purposes. See more examples of my Events Photography in SW England including Royal Photography in the SW.
I have recently enjoyed working with with the superb Thrive Hubs on some contemporary business interior photography in Plymouth. Thrive Hubs offer very high quality office space including hot-desking and short term rental and Ocean Crescent, Plymouth is well worth a visit! Our photoshoot was to show the contemporary spaces, fully styles and with people. We used lots of professional lighting to show the space at its best and create fresh, dynamic, contemporary images. Variety

Working as a commercial photographer in Devon and Cornwall really does provide me with a varied and diverse working life; every day is very different! Although the purpose and the techniques are always similar, the subject matter and location environments can be assorted and very mixed. I meet lots of interesting people, go to places I never realised exist and learn about all sorts of organisations. I love my work.

Examples

Last month my work as a commercial photographer in the South West included: Antique chairs in a country house, a health & safety director in a petrol terminal, contemporary kitchen interiors, working portraits of trainees in a college, some corporate business headshots, product images of horse riding boots and an aerial drone shoot of a school!

Environments & People

The environments for these locations are all so different - from industrial docks in Plymouth, to a rural Dartmoor home, to a factory in Cornwall, to a large college campus, to a modern office complex. And the people involved can be anyone from trainee to CEO - all fascinating in their own way. So I never get bored or tired with my work and the people I work with.

Common Links?

The common link to all of these apparently different commercial photography projects (other than Devon & Cornwall) is that we are capturing brands. All of my work is for marketing & communications purposes, commissioned by marketing professionals or business owners. So my job is to create images which use the environment, the people and the subject matter to give power and reality to a marketing campaign.

Where do the Images End Up?

The petrol terminal images will end up in an annual report, the headshots on a website team page, the kitchens in a brochure, the boots on an e-commerce site and the trainees in an apprentice event promo poster and social media. Just a few examples of different ways to use images as marketing assets.

I have lots of experience of construction photography in Devon & Cornwall. I regularly photograph for construction contractors, house builders, surveyors and architects in South west England. Sometimes the shoots are to create marketing images of finished sites and sometimes of the site in progress. The completed site images are good for general marketing for the builder or designer and the photography viewpoints, angles, and weather are careful considered. Photography is also valuable during the construction process. These images can show the procedures, skills and processes of construction and also provide a story of the progress of the site. I am sometimes hired to produce monthly images of a site each month for the whole build process and my clients find these images very good for social media promotion of the scheme. You can see more images of my industrial, technical and construction photography in Devon & Cornwall here.

Student Lifestyle Photography

This is something a little different. This style of student lifestyle photography was commissioned for various marketing campaigns in Devon. The creative brief was to show students out and about in real situations rather than in subject environments. We shot outdoors on location one year and then built a studio in the college with a specially designed background the following year.

Collaborating on Student Lifestyle Photography

I worked closely with a creative agency on most of these shots. I am able to recommend such agencies for various types of photography. I mostly cover Devon & Cornwall but am happy to discuss projects further afield. View a video slideshow for one such campaign... Isles of Scilly Photo Book

I'm a regular visitor to the amazing Isles of Scilly and have many photographs of the Islands. I have just published a photo book on the Isles of Scilly via "Bob Books". Having visited these amazing Islands several times, I have based the book on my Isles of Scilly image portfolio. Check out the folio or the book and see why I've become addicted to doing photography of the Isles of scilly! You can view the book via this link below Isles of Scilly Photo book by Tony Cobley. Communities, Charities & Public Sector Photography in Devon & Cornwall

I enjoy doing photography for communities and public sector organisation in Devon and Cornwall and for charity organisations in the social sector. I often work with internal communications and marketing departments on these projects or with other agencies. I like to fully understand the brand values of an organisation and convert them into creative images. Typical photography includes community case studies, events, annual report photography and general images for communications and PR.

Communities & Public Sector Photography Requirements

I cover all of South West England and am always happy to discuss creative ideas and rates. I often spend time reading up on brand guidelines and styles ahead of this type of photography work. Please don't hesitate to get in touch with Tony Cobley Photography if I can help your organisation.

Transport Photography throughout the UK

I provide marketing, PR and comm's photography for national and local transport operators and vehicle owners throughout the south west and in other areas of the UK.

I photography vehicles on location, in action and also with people to give a human interset or lifestyle approach.

I have photographed many types of vehicle, old and new from busses to classic cars, helicopters to tankers! I often work with regional and national transport providers to photograph their vehicles for PR and marketing purposes. I've also worked for local authorities on campaigns to promote public transport.

In addition, I can provide headshots and other types of corporate events and PR photography to transport organisations.

The South West landscape is a wonderful backdrop for shooting a vehicle on location for promotion or editorial purposes. I have also photographed vehicles for individuals who wish to sell the vehicle or simply  show off their pride and joy!

Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you'd like to discuss vehicle photography in Devon, Cornwall and beyond.

Auschwitz - Berkenau, Poland

Auschwitz photography: In October 2016 I visited the Auschwitz - Berkenau concentration camps in Poland where 1.1 million human beings were killed by other human beings. After many years of reading and watching about what happened there, I finally got to see it with my own eyes and camera. I hope that my Auschwitz photography conveys the respect, sorrow and sadness I feel about this place and what happened there.

Auschwitz Photography

It wasn't until I was back in England editing these photographs that it sunk in that I had actually been there. It is impossible to put into words the emotion that this place and its history can evoke. My guide at Auschwitz - Berkenau, whose uncle was there, said these poignant  words: "Everyone should come here to remind us that not so many years ago human beings did such things to other human beings."
